Память это не выпрошеное подаяние, а осознанные действия тех кому это не безразлично.
Vot i ne sohranyaetsya pamyatj o evreyah v Latgalii, potomu chto im i ih potomkam bezrazlichno. Eto iz lichnogo opita.

You are right, that jewish people in Latvia do not want to remember their own history. In Ludza there are several Hollacoust memorials. People remember victims of Hollacoast, I do not know any villager who would not recognized that tradegy. But instead saying that local goverment and people should do something about jewish history (whisn they are most of the time involved ) jewish people should do aomething too, just not to say "we deserved".
I live in NY and we are only non jewish family in our street, also my and my husbands colleagues most are jewish. I met many jewish people from Latvia and Ludza here. From my personal experience after talking with them I would say that they are DO NOT care about keeping memories and some history about native towns. It is sad. And for local commutity in Latvia is very hard to keep that part of history.

Dear Mr.Averbuh
I was born and raised in Ludza the most beautiful city in Latgale. All jewish people who survived after World War II and came back from different places after war, later in 60's, 70s', 80s' and 90s' moved out of the Ludza. Most of them went to live in Riga and later immigrated to Isarael or USA.
Some of their desents I met in Riga and USA.
In early 90s' only about 20 older jewish people lived in there. Their children DIDN'T want to live in Ludza. That time I was working in local hospital and was very upset to see that jewish community was dissapearing. My family still live in Ludza and most of my classmates still live there, but younger jewish generation wanted something else. Older generation kept traditions as far as they can, but one by one they passad away and there are no jewish people who would keep traditions and history in there, and their children and grand children are not interested to do it. So sorry to tell you but I think jewish communities should be more involved to keep historical facts and places in such places. Yes, the local museum trying to do so, but there is no interest about it.
It was very said to see when the last synagoge was closed. Before war there were 6 ot them. Ludza's jewish decents don't visit the city and not keeping in touch even with some none jewish friends (I am talking about my generation). I know that from personal experience.
